5) Mange mange mites are found in some hay. They burrow under the skin causing the guinea pig to scratch, sometimes to the point of fitting. This condition can be fatal if left untreated or treated too late.
What to do about mange: give 0.2mls of Ivermectin x 3 doses, 10 days apart. This is a prescription-only medicine. from the vet. 10 days allows for the next hatch before the next treatment.. Anti-parasite bathing is required at least 2 days after each treatment. Leave the shampoo on for 15 mins before rinsing. If the guinea pig continues to scratch, it is probably mites decomposing under the skin. This will pass.
Prognosis for mange: very good, if caught in time.
Prevention of mange: mange mites come in the hay. So use quality hay or change your supplier. Vaccum packed hay can be a breeding ground for parasites. Worm regularly with Ivermectin and Valbazen or Panacur from the vet. Have a microscopic skin slide taken at the vet or our clinic.
